US Christian Commission
The U.S. Christian Commission was an Organization that was started up in New York by the YMCA. The Christian Commission was founded on 16th Nov, 1861 in New York. D.L. Moody was the president of the North-west branch of the Commission. The Christian Commission was there to help the wounded soldiers. There were not a lot of women Delegates. There were only 2 known ones during the beginning of the Civil War. Most of the Delegates were men. The USCC was a Christian Organization that helped with the Soldiers Aide during the war. We ministered to them, we gave them books, magazines, food, clothing, writing utensils, paper, ink, we helped them write letters home to their loves ones.
The Christian Commission got funding from the U.S. Government. The Christian Commissions clothing was simple. A suit for the men and a lovely dress for the women. The two known women delegates were Jane Boswell Moore and her mother Jane C. Moore. After the war started the Christian Commission started to get more women involved in it. There was 1,000 delegates sent to the battlefield hospitals and Christian Commission Stations. The Christian Commission worked with the Sanitary Commission during the Civil War. The Christian Commission and The Sanitary Commission didn’t get along at the beginning of the war. The reason for that is, is because the Sanitary Commission thought that we might take away some of their work that they were doing. But after a while the Christian Commission and The Sanitary Commission got along.
Many of the solders were so grateful for the Christian Commission cheerful and wonderful attitude towards them. A lot of the soldiers did not have Christ in their lives so we helped them before the died to have Christ in there hearts. And we also helped soldiers that were healing have Christ is there hearts. We had church services in the hospitals for those that couldn’t get out of the hospital and church services for the soldiers before they went to war. We also sang hymns to the soldiers at the church service and we also handed out bibles, hymnals, psalms etc for the soldiers to have so when they stopped to camp they could read their bibles before they went to bed and so they could pray too. Many of the men were so pleased with the USCC.
They Christian Commission is still here today. It works all over the world to help countries and especially to help the people in need. The Christian Commission also helps the Soldiers now-a-days.
The Christian Commission also gave to the soldiers house wives, Pillows, bed ticks, netting to protect the soldiers from flies, wash rags and old linen. Many of the soldiers when they left home didn’t have any of that when they left.
