Attention Troops!
On the 11th day of February next in the year of our Lord 1863 there is to be a general cessation of hostilities for the purpose of permitting a Ball to which all and sundry, soldier and civilian, have been most cordially invited.
Certain reminders relating to the comportment of the troops on such occasions:
-
Wear the best of uniform and accoutrements that are available to you. However, no one, should you be forced by circumstance to appear in less than finery, will show disdain for a uniform greatly worn out in service to one's country.
-
No weapons of any kind should be worn during a ball. Should you feel the need to wear saber or pistol as you make your way to the venue, do remove them upon entering the hall. You may place them with your head-gear. There will, hopefully be a table for that purpose.
-
Horsemen, do NOT wear spurs to a ball. No gentleman would, knowing that there is always the possibility of doing severe and embarrassing damage to a lady's gown.
-
Gentlemen, remove your hats! Neither on the dance floor, nor off it should any man be covered. We will all be in the presence of ladies for whom we will wish to show no disdain. Should there be a designated place to leave one's hat, do leave it there. If there is not, place it on the table in front of you.
-
For those among us for whom dancing is a seldom practiced art, remember that all dances will be taught. Let not a fancied embarrassment of skill keep you from the enjoyment of the evening.
-
It is every gentleman's duty to see to it that every lady receive enjoyment from the evening's festivities. Not only may you, but courtesy insists that you dance with as many ladies as time permits. Note that on this occasion it is not necessary to have been already introduced to the lady. You may and should approach any lady present and ask for the favor of a dance.
It is every man's duty and pleasure to to make the approaching Ball a great success. |
